Usually made of fine linen or cotton, the mop cap was a head covering always worn publicly, both indoors and out, by females of the Pioneer and Colonial era. Since hair washing was an infrequent activity during those times (it was thought to be unhealthy to wash one's hair too often), the cap simply helped to protect the hair from the daily abuse of smoke from fires and brick ovens, dust from travel, grease from cooking, and so on. What a great way to get away with a bad hair day and what a fabulous addition to any period style costume!

This pattern comes in "one size fits most". (You determine the correct size by measuring the circumference of the intended wearers head for the elastic fitting.)
